Southern District Convocation United Christian College

GOOD OLE UCC About US
United Christian College {UCC}, whose main campus is located in Goldsboro NC, understands that effective ministry in the church and the world requires the mastery and utilization of specialized skills. Those skills include competence in the preparation and conduct of worship and preaching •• the ability to communicate effectively in teaching, preaching, and evangelism; the productive approaches to mission and outreach; the creative relationship to people of all races, ages, gender, and social class; and proficiency in administration and pastoral care. For this reason, theological education at United Christian College assists the development and cultivation of those specialized skills for meaningful expression of the Biblical, historical, and theological beliefs of the Christian church, with an awareness of their social and cultural ramifications today.
The underlying commitment of United Christian College is the belief that it is essential not to be focused on institutional survival per se, but to focus on preparing students for ministry in an anticipated future. This awareness of an anticipated future under girds institutional support for being flexible, resilient, and responsive to the reality of shifting global scenes in which United Christian College will ultimately minister.
In the past few decades UCC have sought to provide theological education to rural and urban churches and their church leaders in what is known as a "non-traditional" model and training.
We are striving to foster these nine characteristics of non-traditional education within UCC.
| Center around the Bible | |
| Be interdisciplinary, especially with the social sciences | |
| Foster faith dialogue-especially among Islam, Judaism, and Christianity | |
| Foster dialogue with brokenness & bondage | |
| Foster dialogue with the living God in the present through the Holy Spirit in every teaching situation | |
| Attend to issues of women in the church, especially in the light of the fact that 70% of the African-American church is women | |
| Attend to the issues of youth in the church, especially in the light of the fact that so |
| many youth in poor and marginalized communities are outside the church and are so often "at risk" |
| Attend to the issues of immigration and bilingualism, which have become increasingly pressing the context in the US | |
| Develop a more integrated understanding of salvation as health and wellness, in order to foster a more active engagement with these concerns. |
To complete these goals and tasks, UCC's curriculum includes two degree-programs (AS and BS) and a non-degree program (Diploma). In August 2007, UCC will add to its curriculum track a Master of Religious Education degree.
